thanks steve but do they make a real noticable difference cos i dont want to waste money.

They can be useful for bringing out subtle details but they also darken the image so unless you have at least 6-8" of aperture I would steer clear and save your money.

thanks steve mine is 130mm (5 and a half in.) my area ia very polluted with light maybe a neb filter would be a better option. i can see m42 but no colour in it at all its just a faint fuzz with loads of stars in it.

Have you considered a Baader Neodymium?

You will really struggle to see any colour in any nebula as your night vision is essentially black and white. The nebula filter will improve the contrast of what you see but will not reveal colour.
