July 16, 2014: Really nice proms during my solar lunchtime

Recommended Posts

I just had the scope out during lunch, and the proms showed up nicely between the clouds. On the eastern limb a huge plume is showing. It starts out like a jet-like structure at right angles to the limb, and then fans out to the north like wind-blown smoke. To the north of this structure a low arc has developed. On the western limb (quite far northwards) a big set of proms can be seen, looking like a large collection of intertwined loops. A few filaments and some bright plage can be seen on the disk. About half a dozen students came to watch. Great fun, despite interfering clouds.
