Hello samalex - Sounds like you're taking a good approach in that you want to get to a point you can share your knowledge of the cosmos with your children. My kids are all grown now but I have three little granddaughters for whom I hope to strike an interest in astronomy once I learn enough to know what I'm talking about and to be somewhat prepared for those insightful questions only innocent minds can contemplate. 

Welcome to SGL and good luck in achieving those honorable goals described in your OP...

Hi and welcome . I'm from England but I'm now in Texas too on my vacation spent a week in Galveston and now in San Antonio must say its a great place to be into astronomy wish I could stay.
