open cluster IC 4665

Recommended Posts

While my telescope was busy imaging last night, I pottered around with my bincoculars and I happened upon a very nice open cluster very close to the star Cebalrai. Its overall shape reminded me of one a space invader in one of those old arcade computer games. After checking stellarium, it turned out to be IC 4665. Well worth a look if you get the chance.

It is truly an amazing open cluster-one of the best summer objects for binoculars!

While nearby, look east of Gamma Ophiuchi (the star south of Cebalrai) for what seems to be a dimmer equivalent to the Hyades-the main stars are 66, 67, 68, 70 and 73 Ophiuchi. This is Melotte 186, also a great binocular object.
