More LHE experiments.

Local Histogram Equalization is a 'local contrast' tool in Pixinsight and I'm finding it well worth going back over 'finished' images for a further tweak. A couple of examples.

And just the spiral parts and core redone in this one;

Love those, and I think the new versions are an improvement. You may have overdone it just a touch in the new Orion Nebula perhaps? It's bringing out more structure and looks more 3 dimensional which is great but is a tad oversharp to my eye. I'm not quite sure, we're talking small margins here. M31 is spot on for me.

Actually, having walked away and looked again I'm not sure about it being too sharp. It may just be the contrast of flicking between the two that is giving me that impression. I definitely prefer the new one, but I can't say if something intermediate between the two would look better to my eye.

Hi Olly, this may be of use to you in the use of LHE in Pixinsight and controlling it's effect on the parts you don't want to enhance, I picked this up from videos made by Gerald Wechselberger.

Thanks John, that's my Sunday homework! My present method is to export a couple of levels of LHE mod into PS and then work in layers. There's probably a more coherent way...
