CDC and User Defined Objects

Can anyone point me to instructions on how to use the User Defined Objects feature ?

I think it is there for anything you want to place, but don't have on a catalog.  It might also be useful if you only want a few items from a catalog rather than the whole thing (e.g half a dozen PGC galaxies rather than 1.6 million).
