Noise is present regardless of whether you have an image of a DSO or the Moon.  Stacking lunar images gets rid of some of the noise allowing the image to be further transformed (generally sharpened) to an extent that is not possible with a single frame.

The difference isn't shown brilliantly as it's not what I was setting out to do, but you get the general idea if you look at the images in my posting at the start of this thread:

The one produced by PIPP is a single frame, and then there's the last image in the post.

What is quite obvious from looking at the edges of the frame in the output from PIPP is the enormous amount of noise in the original images.
