Brand new quality 10x40 for €0!

In 2006 I bought a pair of Bauer 10x42s from a reputable optician who specialised in Bauer binos.

Bauer is a German manufacturer who I believe at the time had their designs manufactured in Japan.

The bins were BAK4-roof prism, multicoated and nitrogen-filled, cost €160 and I was quite pleased with them.

Over the years, however, they started to cause a few problems. The eye cups would not stay up properly, the dioptrie wheel was losing tiny bearing balls and the image quality away from centre had deteriorated.

So I contacted Bauer which is located in Düsseldorf really to try and get some replacement eye cups for a start. They sent me a pair by return of post - free of charge. Unfortunately they were too high. The originals were 15mm high and the replacements 20mm. They fitted (diameter and screw threads were as the originals) but were too high up even when fully screwed down. After several phone calls I decided to go to their offices in Düsseldorf with my bins. The service technician I had spoken to on the phone was not there but I left them there anyhow and they said they would contact me when they had had a look at them.

That was Tuesday this week.

Today, Friday, I got a parcel from them which I expected to be my bins - hopefully repaired and fully serviceable though I expected a repair bill.

Imagine my surprise and delight when I unpacked the parcel and found a brand, spanking new pair of Bauer 8x42s which they had sent as replacement for the ones I'd left there. NO CHARGE!

My old bins are no longer available so this is a more modern instrument also BAK4, multicoated and nitogen filled. I've just tried 'em out and they's well brill! Much better than the old bins.

These Bauer Outdoor 10x42s cost GBP114 from Alan Rhone in the UK so I reckon I's done alright there! I's well chuffed!!

When I sourced spares for my brother in law's Swift binoculars in the UK they charged GBP 25 for a pair of eye cups and a collet!

Bauer are well known in Germany amongst the hunters and wild-life brigade and although my new bins were made in China I cannot fault the quality.

So here's my vote for BAUER!!

Kind regards

Roger
