What colour is that supposed to be?

Recommended Posts

Second post... loads of stupid questions so I will kick off with: I noticed that some scopes have the ability to fit filters and that the filters come in different shades of various colours. I'm only after binoculars 10x50 or perhaps 15x70, would it be an idea to look for ones that can fit filters or is the filter thing something of a distraction?

Many thanks in advance

That's not a stupid question at all. Post it in the Equipment, Binoculars section and see what Stephen Tonkin says, he's our bino expert. I think there are some that do take standard 1.25" filters and some objects (large diffuse nebulae, mostly) will greatly benefit from their use.

Coloured filters are sometimes used by planetary observers to help bring out detail. I say "sometimes" because some observers never use them. I find them a distraction and avoid them. I can't see a use for coloured filters with binoculars. If you had very fancy binos that take regular telescope eyepieces then you could thread 1.25" filters. That might well be useful for viewing large nebulae, but it would also be very expensive. Binos that take regular telescope eyepieces are pricey. So the bottom line is: don't worry about coloured filters.
