My shot at Perseids

Recommended Posts

Taken last night (13th). Not at the peak of the shower... I saw plenty visually but only seem to have captured 2, even though the camera was snapping away for more than 5 hours!

They do seem to leave nice and colourful trails. The two captures combined:

This image shows the trails between the 2 events:

Full trails. The "meteor" in the bottom right is actually an iridium flare:

I found even at ISO 800 and f3.5 only the brightest meteors (say around mag -3 or brighter) showed up, at least on my (10mm) wide angle lens. I guess they move so fast. I took a lot of shots mainly at 30" but also upto 3 mins and found very few meteors on the frames even on those I stopped exposing on when I saw a bright meteor cross the field. Doubtless had I used my 50mm f1.4 lens, I'd have picked up more had they entered the much smaller field of view but that would have considerably reduced the number anyway. As always there were times a bright meteor showed up between shots!
