Near Trecastle

Recommended Posts

Just got back from a trip to a body of water near Trecastle. The skies were cloudy when we first set up at 9:30, but by 10, the skies miraculously cleared. There was a fine mist in many areas of the sky, but the North and East were pretty clear. Saturn looked amazing, and I could pick out detail on the sphere plus the Cassini division. Hercules cluster looked great. Got my first sight of M81 and M82. M36 looked rubbish due to the mist, and some of the clusters in Cassiopeia were spotted.

It was weird seeing so many stars, but breathtaking views of the night sky tonight. Why can't they shut off all street lights at midnight and we wouldn't have to travel 80 miles to get lp-free skies?

ah well

A couple of years ago, looking at ways to save money, Caerphilly council issued a questionaire to households proposing several ways to cut street lighting - switching off after midnight amongst them. Unfortunately, for whatever reasons, nothing much has come out of it. :(
