Solar filter?

Hello,

I have a skywatcher 80ED APO and would like to do some solar viewing and perhaps later on some imaging. Is there some filter I could buy? I dont want to spend the money on a new solar scope.

Baader Solar film (and make your own filter holder from cardboard etc) or buy a pre-made film and holder like this: http://www.firstligh...lar-filter.html I realise you are in the USA but you should be able to get a similar product over there. These will give you a white light (visible light) image and show you sunspots and the bright faculae as well as the solar surface granulation. They are quite safe to use both visually and photographically (But you must buy the 5.0 visual grade not the 3.8 photo grade).

Something like this (or make one yourself from just the film) will allow you to do white light imaging.

Unfortunately H-alpha solar filters cost a lot more. Something like a PST would be the most cost effective start to H-a solar viewing.
