Have you considered using a piezo speaker/sounder as a rain detection? If you have one of those annoying birthday cards that play a tune when you open it then you have the basis of your detector. The circular disc that acts as a speaker vibrates when subject to a voltage. But they also work in reverse, if subject to a vibration they generate a voltage or signal. If the disc is left in a suitable location were it is likely to be struck by a rain drop [you could wire a number of them in parallel to cover a greater area] the pressure of the rain drop will cause a voltage/signal to be generated which is relayed to whatever interface you happen to be using.
