Work Experience - Need help!

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I'm a student in the UK (England) currently in my A-levels (Year 12) looking to pursue physics, and particularly astronomy, as a future career. I was wondering if anyone here new any way to get work experience in physics, but preferably astrophysics/astronomy, to get experience in the area. I'm looking for placements that take place during this summer.

I am already in the process of applying to some universities who offer summer placements in astronomy related departments, but your input would be much appreciated! So let me know if you have any contacts and/or knowledge of placements this summer.

Thanks in advance

What about approaching a local observatory (if there is one close enough)? I'm sure they could either offer something to you - maybe to assist in any ongoing projects they may have running or if not, I'm sure they could point you in the right direction. Especially if you're keen and offering to assit for free they may snap your hand off. Everyone needs to start somewhere. Failing that, I'm at a loss to think of anything else. I imagine it is a bit of a specialist field to break into?

Any professors you could write to for advice? (or Facebook/Tweet and all that business) Like Professor Brian Cox or Dr Chris Lintott. I'm sure a genuine, keen student would get all the help needed!

Good luck with the venture :)

If you have a telescope you could try a DIY approach to getting work experience.

The goal would be to get something published in a recognised magazine / journal. So consider what resources you have available and your level of experience & knowledge. Then browse through the professional publications (we're talking academic library, not WH Smith ;) ) to see where you could contribute.

Most professional astronomy is pretty "dry", academic stuff - not looking through telescopes. It is also in obscure topics that tend to be fashionable (in order to get the funding to do the work) rather than stuff which might interest you as an amateur. However, if you can find something that doesn't need time on the HST, you might be in with a chance - just don't set your sights too high.

Thanks for the advice guys, I've reached out to a few local observatories to ask about work experience/volunteering, and have thought about the amateur angle too.

Unfortunately I don't think clearing your driveway would hold much sway on my CV

If you look on the STFC website Careers section, they have a 'Vacation student scheme' - the places may not be located well for you, unless you are able to live away from home.

Hopefully this weblink will take you there: http://stfc.ac.uk/About+STFC/491.aspx

It says placements for 2013 will be posted in March.

Hope this helps,

Callum

Most universities with Astro departments will take students for work experience - although in Oxford at least places go quickly. If there's somewhere near you surf their website and if nothing obvious exists write a letter to the head of department or the schools liaison if one exists. Remember to say why you want a place - ie that you love astronomy. Good luck!

Chris
