Quick note: I have MartinB's old Celestron HD Wedge, complete with the bodge, and I have no problems with it (yes, the adjustors are awful, but they do work)

Its not so much a pain, just could have been designed a lot better. Will certainly be a lot better in a permanant setup.

I originally set up the C8 and wedge on the patio. I aligned it and then I marked out the position of the feet on the patio. Leave the wedge on the tripod, don't knock the wedge adjustors and leave the tripod feet extensions as they were.

Then if you set the tripod back on the marks it should require very little tweaking to align to Polaris.

I did the same with the HEQ5 mount when I got it 2 years ago.
