14/08/12 sun spot has to be a record!

Has anyone else seen the simply humongous sun spot on today's sun? Has to be one of the biggest I've seen and after taking my solar filter off the scope I was able to see it with the naked eye through the filter.

Has to be one of the biggest ever surely??? IT'S MASSIVE

Suspect 2002 was better. That year there was an awful lot that you could see with the naked eye, and they were not a case of managing to make them out. They were somewhat prominemt on the surface.

Any idea where there might be some pics ? Also is there such a thing as a guinness record for the biggest sun spot ??

Well if you Google SOHO you get the live image from the satellite ... as to record, it must be recorded somewhere, but I'm sure the ones at Kelling last year were equally as big, if not more so

There are some substantial ones around from time to time, but on the whole, this solar maximum isn't as good as the ones a few cycles back (man, that makes me seem old: "call that a sunspot! when I were a lad, we had PROPER sunspots, we had!" ), Still, it is always nice spotting one with the naked eye.
