Image Stabilisation

Recommended Posts

Hi all

When I get around to trying some short exposure widefield imaging with my piggybacked 1100d, should I have the IS turned on or off - does it make a difference?

Cheers

AFAIK, most IS lenses need the IS turning off when they are mounted on a tripod.

Some Canon lenses are able to detect that the camera is fixed in place and don't activate the IS. I've no clue which lenses they are, so if on a firm mounting, turn off the IS. If you don't the IS will activate and instead of a nice steady image, you'll get blurring caused by the IS.

Should definitely be off. IS / VR tends to work using algorithms to move gyros to counteract common movements when hand holding - these aren't present when on a tripod so the result it a blurred image.

It's a digital camera, try it with the IS on and the IS off. It not as if you are wasting a film and waiting 2 weeks to get it deveolped to find the answer.

If one is worse then the other then hit the Delete option for the bad one.
