How do you accurately focus with a webcam?

As per the title really.

Is there a bit of software to use?

I try to use a bantinov mask to focus on Mars but it doesn't seem to work. Should I perhaps focus with a bright star?

Absolutely. That's what I do. I slew to a nearby bright star (Regulus, in the case of Mars at the moment), focus with the Bahtinov mask, then slew back to Mars.

I use the guidescope, guidecam and cross-hairs to accurately centre Mars so that you can get back to it after focussing.

... and to quickly get back to any position (mars or focus star) you can use EQMOD's bookmark list (I think it's a right click on the RA/DEC display to bring up the bookmarks window).
