.. If i were to put a skywatcher explorer 200p OTA on a Celestron slt goto mount, would it be too heavy for the mount motors to operate correctly? Would there be a horrible sound of crunching gears

If you could fit it on carefully and it was well balanced you probably wouldn't actually break anything but the OTA would be pretty undermounted and the goto accuracy might well suffer. I couldn't really recommend it.

If i were you id look at an eq5 on ebay iv been looking they are about £250 (without motors) but you can upgrade later eq5 is the min i would go at high mags anything smaller would get a bit iffy

vibration is a killer even a bit of wind can make a clear night a frustrating downer. Im still a newb but i think the more seasend

watchers would back me up on this.
