Totally Unscientific Photography Experiment

If you 'stretch' the darker images in photoshop, so they are as bright as the higher ISO images, the noise will probably be about the same, maybe worse.

Just something for you to think about :-)

There's a good explanation in this book with some samples images.

Interesting study.

Generally speaking, of course, increasing ISO will give increased noise, although newer camera models have much improved noise control.

Similarly, increasing exposure will give increased noise, and will also introduce other considerations like camera tracking capabiity of the system.

Since noise control (both ISO and exposure related) is dependant on the design of the chip electronics (which I don't profess to fully understand!) I would have thought the results of any experiment such as this will vary according to camera model, so are almost certainly not definitive.

It would be interesting to hear from any techies out there who understand the detail of chip electronics wrt noise handling.
