DSO imaging on a moonlit night - advice please

Recommended Posts

Looks like another clear night for me tonight, fingers crossed, but I need some advice to make the most of it...

I am trying to get as much data as I can for the Horsehead nebula. I'm imaging with a mono CCD and have only been capturing data for the Ha channel thus far.

Now the moon will only be a couple of degrees away tonight, so here's the questions:

I want to capture RBG at some point (and will post another question specifically about that) but I am assuming that's better done when the moon is well out of the way - is that correct?

Is it even sensible to go after more Ha data with the moon this close or would I be better off with another target (or if the seeing is as good as last night doing some planetary captures).

I'm just a beginner at imaging and I'd really appreicate any advice to help make the most of these rare clear evenings (been away or working for almost all of the other clear nights since last October!).

Thanks in advance, Ian

I grabbed a load of Rosette subs last night, but the moon is just too close tonight so I'm practising star colour with a load of short subs on the Beehive. I'm just using an unmodded DSLR though.
