Stargazer Jack
So do I however will need to buy a camera first. I know it depends on budget but will a digital camera do or does it HAVE to be a DSLR for imaging auroras?
Mr Q
I would think a digital camera would be needed so the images could be downloaded to your computer, then to this site. Otherwise any camera would work that has a slow shutter speed selection or better, a open shutter lock for 1 to several seconds exposures. If the aurora is fairly bright, should be no problems snagging a pic of it. Good luck and save your money for the camera you will need.

Viv
Yes - As Mr Q has said. You need a camera with 'bulb' / long exposure setting. I'm not sure if any of the compact digitals have this - any one ??If dslr the lens is equally, important. Wide mm & low aperature. And a remote or cable release shutter, so you don't get camera wobble.Do lots & lots of practice on the night sky at home, before your holiday. Stargazer Jack
Thanks, also if I went for a DSLR, would the 'basic' one be OK like the Canon 1100D?
Viv
Am sure it would be - could be worth starting a new thread, asking current owners.
