Small reflectors.

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Are there different qualities of, say, 6" reflector scopes, what are the makes to look out for? I'm thinking Dobsonian for cost but what about the quality and durability of the optical surfaces e.t.c. What magnification is maximal? Just been watching 'Stargazing Live', it's very interesting and clear skies this year.

Thanks,

Bill.

As above, Skywatcher are a good brand. The name sounds a bit naff but the scopes are among the best at the serious budget end of the market.

Don't worry about magnification; you change magnification by changing the eyepiece. On DSOs (deep sky objects), the job of the scope is usually to make things brighter rather than bigger. Aperture is the key here and 6" is a very respectable start.

Have a look at FLO's website (link at top of page) - they've got some good info for starting out.

Andrew
