Compatible GPS for NexStar 4SE

Recommended Posts

Hi All

Just starting off and have today ordered the nextstar 4se.

I would like to have an easy a start as possible so am considering getting a CN16 GPS Accessory

I have priced them in the UK but they are much cheaper in the US (£125 delivered)

I already have GlobalSat Bluetooth GPS unit that I use with my phone (xda exec) for stanav, is there a way I can use this receiver or are there any cheaper alternatives to the CN16 GPS ?

Thank for any help or advice

The GPS unit's are only useful if you are moving around with the 'scope lots. If you usually observe from your garden for example, once you have entered your location the telescope will remember it and use that location the next time. The one main advantage of the GPS unit is that it will enter the date and time for you, but if you own a watch thats not usually a big stress.

As for ordering kit from the US be careful as you will be charged 21.5% tax on anything you order (4% import duty and 17.5% VAT) you may also be charged a handling fee by the courier who delivers the package. As a rule of thumb add 33% onto any US price.

Last but not least, welcome to The Stargazers Lounge!

Hi Ivascope

I'd echo Gordon's point about not needing one if your always going to be observing from your back garden. But, if you do move around but only occasionally, then you only need enter the new site in multimap to get the coordinates.

However, if you already have a GPS unit there is an adaptor (Earthshine) that you can buy to make it speak to your SE. The link below is for information about the adaptor.

It's from Michael Swanson's Nexstar site, which is always worth a look for lots of advice on Nexstar scopes. The homepage URL is:

Also worth checking out the Nexstar Yahoo group for advice (don't have the link handy, but google it).

And welcome to Stargazers as well.
