prob. a stupid question...

Recommended Posts

Here goes... :?

I have a skywatcher DOB 200 f1200 and the next door neighbour has a canon 400d and 300mm lens, will he get a bigger image of the moon with the camera and 300mm lens or thru DOB & camera without lens at prime focus? would we also need to get a eyepiece projector as well as t-ring to get images larger than camera and lens alone? He is keen to image but does not want to splash the cash if no real improvement on images he has already got. Finally would Saturn look any good at prime focus with the canon and if so what would be approx. setup of camera to achieve a good image.

Sorry if these questions are dumb but would appreciate your knowledge on this one.

Cheers

Gary

The Dob. has a focal length of 1200mm and so will work as a 1200mm camera lens - much bigger than the 300mm lens, and probably faster at f/6. The moon will probably fill the frame nicely. You need the T ring only to get it to work if the focuser is like the other skywatcher newts.

For Saturn, get a webcam, but be prepared to have a load of bother tracking it manually, the DSLR won't be much good at planets unfortunately.

Muchas gratias CC.

Your response is very much appreciated, chap next door is keen to get into the astro stuff, will try and convince him to buy a heq5 and we can pool resources and post a few pictures, be prepared for more stupid questions. :)
