Moonfilters and secondary shadow

Recommended Posts

It was all clear last night. My wife and daughter (who is ill) went to bed early so I decided to go out. I tried looking at the moon but the 'shadow' of the secondary was clearly visible at most magnifications. I think this is probably because the bright light makes my eyepupil smaller than the exitpupil of the scope and eyepiece and I guess I need a moonfilter to fix this.

But how 'strong' should this filter be for 5"? I'm also looking at a 8" dob so I should probably ask advice for filter strenght for 8" as well.

When I use the scope in daylight this shadow is always visible. I have read that for instance the small maksutovs are proposed for daylight viewing but isn't the secondary shadow visible in this design as well?

Thanks
