EQ6 RA Play Elimination - HELP!!!

Hi Folks

Stripped down the EQ6 today for its regrease. The stripdown and regrease went OK, its the putting back together again!!!!

I've reassembled everything, but I have a lot of play in RA. I can either remove the play or be able to rotate the worm spur, but not both! I've tightened the retaining nut at the end of the worm gear, adjusted the 2 set screws, played with the 4 allen bolts and finally given up!!

Have I missed something obvious, or do I just keep tweaking????

A frustrated Daz!

OK, things appear much better. Came back to it tonight and got it pretty much straight away.

Guys on the EQ6 group suggested making sure the worm end cap at the drive wheel end was tight, otherwise the shaft had a tendancy to move - and to make sure the retaining ring at the other end was tight, but not too tight!!

Upshot is I have a very small amount of play - but I think I can live with it for now.

DEC was a bit easier to do - all nicely back together and no play there.

I have a little bit of lateral movement in the head, but I rather suspect it was there before, and it must be down to the dodgy bearings Synta use - perhaps someone more mechanically minded might confirm.

I have an RA upgrade on the way from a chap in the states, and I think I will replace the bearings when I do that.

Next job is get the electronics upgraded with the Rajiva GOTO and then we're good to go!

Yes make sure the end caps are really tight, easiest way of adjusting smoothness was unload the scope, take the motor off the axis your adjusting and rotate the gear with your thumb adjusting the 2 grub screws (outer casing), slacken off the 4 hex bolts first. You feel with your thumb as your adjusting the grubs until you start to feel it bind slightly. It takes a couple of attempts to get it right. My backlash is pretty much zero now, only week point left is the naff dovetail (new 1 ordered off Raysrings).

If you still have lots of play after doing all the above you may have to shim the main shaft, mine took an extra 10 thou shim to get it smooth.

I basically followed this guys instructions when rebuilding and shimming, I also replaced the worm bearings for good measure, the thrust bearings should be OK as they are pretty substantial and are really not doing much work for their size.

Thanks George

I was doing exactly that before - except I hadn't tightened the end caps and retaining ring!! I also used the beevo site and I had to pack an extra 3 thou

Where did you get the bearings from, might I enquire, and did you replace the conical bearings as well?
