Is this a Backlash problem?

Frank,

Could be that due to the weight that the HEQ5 can carry if it were to stop dead some damage could occur due to the ammount of torque on the drive gears and clutches....

Just imagine slewing a 8" Newtonian and ED80 with camera gear and 3 weights at X800 then the whole lot coming to a dead stop  My poor Canon would be catapulted into the neigbours field!

I just slew to the area of the target then go down to X3 or X5 which is fine.

The ETX models have different gears and motors depending on each individual model..The ETX 70 had nylon gears and fairly weak motors whereas the ETX 105 had metal gears and beefy motors as they carried a greater weight.

If you notice there's also a slight delay at the higher slew speeds when starting to move due to the same reason...

If it isn't a feature of the goto it's called sticktion and is a feature of a lot of mounts. Can be quite a nuisance. With Skysensor 2000 if you press the opposite direction key and release this stops the movement. Don't know if syncscan is the same.
