The steel tube seems a bit small to me when comparing it to proper piers that are designed to be bolted down to a massive concrete block. It's cheaper because it has less steel in it though the base fittings will add cost so over all, even less cost in the tube part. In general you get what you pay for. Probably OK for observing though.

That's my original thought, but with respect, neither of us actually know this to be the case.

I wonder has anyone tried bolting one to a concrete base, and what results did they get?

I could of answered your questions as I had arranged to purchase John's pillar but due to a change of design of my observatory (the third re-draft !) I have had to revert back to the traditional concrete pillar design that Gina and a few others are currently using.
