Would this lens be any good for Astrophotography?

Just came across this. Optomax 300mm f5.6 prime lens M42 - adapts EOS Sony NEX | eBay UK

Is this the sort of thing I should be looking for with regards to widefield AP ?

I have te standard lens that came with the Canon 1000d but nothing else.

I would look for something that is F4 or lower.

Andy, that lens looks chuff to be honest.

Consider a prime lens for your camera from the maker or trusted 3rd party. In your case, a quality prime from Canon or say a Sigma. E.g. Go WIDE with a Sigma 30mm f1.8 prime or a Canon 50mm f1.8 or f1.4. If you want to go longer deffo only go for primes, way too much glass in zooms.
