Observatory wiring

Just planning ahead, and wondered how you guys hook up all your equipment.

I've just ordered one of the PC focuser interfaces from FLO, so that's one USB port, then there's the USB feed from my DSLR, then the shutter release via an RS232 / USB converter, and then the PC / mount cable, also via a USB adapter. So that's 4 usb ports.

I'm guessing a USB hub is the best option, placed at the scope with one cable running back to the PC ?

My set up is with a lappy that has three USB ports. The mount and imaging camera get their own and then a hub has the guide camera, thingy (dongle?) for the wireless gamepad and laptop mouse - seems to work OK. However some folk have trouble if running too many power hungry items from an unpowered hub.

I use a powerd hub at the scope and an active lead from that to the laptop.

I have an unpowered 4 port hub at the mount and a single 5m active extension USB running to the laptop- no problems so far, even with the power hungry DSI guide cam

Go powered USB hub at the scope with a lead to the lappy. Works pretty much all of the time.

Thanks guys, - I already have a 5m standard USB lead, so will get a powered hub for the scope end. Sounds good!

I have a powered 7 port mounted on the pier, make sure you get a USB2 when buying, a lot of the cheaper one's are only USB1.
