  1. I got my binoculars out last night for the first time in a while and it reminded me how great they are for general wide angled viewing.  If I look at eyepieces for my telescope to give a similar field of view is it best to look for a higher degree of view or can too high distort things too much?  So for example might an 82 degree 32mm be preferable over a 62 degree 40mm or not as they give a similar field of view?

I realise there are other factors but as a general rule?

  2. What are your thoughts on the StarDiscovery150i @ScouseSpaceCadet - pre doing your mods!

Looks to be a sensible option 'swapping' to this. One question - do you need to align the goto each evening or time you go out or are they clever enough to 'remember' the alignment?  I'd have to store this in with the OTA off the GOTO mount and tripod after each use so wondering how much setup id need to do each time I use it.

I don't think you should put a heritage 150p on an eq5. Any Newtonian on an equatorial mount needs to have tube rings so that you can rotate it as required. With the heritage you haven't got half the tube to fit any rings to, and fitting them to the part that is there will prevent the trusses from being retracted.

I believe the rating of the azgti with the heavy duty tripod is actually 9kg so may be a better option than initially thought.

I cant picture what you mean re it needs tube rings to rotate - would there be restrictions putting it on an EQ5?

  4. I'm looking at mounting my Heritage flextube 150p on a goto mount and tripod instead of the dob mount it came on.  Both suggest a may payload of 5kg and the scope is approx 4KG wihout the dob stand.

Ive seen a couple online within my price range - has anyone done this with either of these mounts, might there be any issues?

Skywatcher AZ-GTi WiFi GOTO AZ and Skywatcher Star Discovery WiFi GOTO are the 2 ive seen.

    Thanks.

Yep, the AZ5 will hold it easily , and has a 3/8" socket in the base which matches the standard photo head to photo tripod screw.Assuming your tripod has that, it should be no problem . I've not tried the heritage 150 on my AZ5, it has my Maksutov living on it permanently !

Most tripod heads simply unscrew from the tripod's centre column, I've no idea if your one has grub screws underneath the small platform at the top of the centre column as the Manfrottos do, but if so, it's just the work of seconds to loosen them.

Thanks, one potentially dumb question but I’m assuming the az5 would screw into the bit circled below, or would the top main head part need to be removed and maybe there’s a screw when that’s taken off?

  6. I’ve just been reading @Stu excellent write up, as below, on the 150p and having got this scope I’m wondering what I’ll need to mount it on my Horizon 8115 tripod - assuming this is doable and the tripod will hold the weight? The Dob mount is good but want to compare and see how it works on a tripod.  Any thoughts or advice?

  7. Hi all,

Having dug out my dads 15 year old beginner telescope from the attic I realise things have moved on somewhat and am looking at getting started with a shiny new bit of kit.

Having been reading and reading it seems a reasonable amount of consensus points at getting a Dob as a great starter scope and moving on from their.  I’ve been looking at the SW Heritage 150p flex but am also drawn to the SW Explorer 130p or 150p as they seem to fit in my mind as sensible for use easily in the garden rather than having to find a flat surface for the Dob to sit on, and then crouch down to view (I appreciate larger and more expensive Dobs don’t require this!)  Am I right, or am I missing something with the Dob and it’s ease of use - surely I need a table, patio or other flat surface to use it properly?

Bang for buck I think I’m right in saying the Dob will give me a slightly better experience than the 130p and I think similar to what the 150p has.  At present I’m only looking to enjoy what’s up there and AP is not in my current thought process.

Any advice very welcome for a newbie to this.

    Thanks
