Update: Thanks for everyone’s advice but I have decided that a telescope is not for me. It’s too expensive. 3 steel pipes cost 99. A subpar view of the moon can be achieved through a 8 inch dobsonian for 289 pounds? It’s not worth it. Instead I’ll paint what I see. So as I star at the waning gibbous moon tonight I wonder what could have been if I bought a telescope. The moon shines as if a symbol to mock me. A telescope is not for me. So what does Nair al Saif do , where does iota Orionis travel off too now? Moonlapses through iphones, paintings of the moon and general observing of planets and stars unaided. I’ll share my advice to the newcomers and teach them what I have learnt. I will still always love astronomy, just like the way I love the sea.

Update: Thanks to everyone’s help but I have decided a telescope is not for me. 289 pounds for a subpar view of the moon. I’ll always watch the moon/stars unaided and maybe think about buying telescope but I doubt so. Ill share the wisdom from my questions to help other sgl members.

Would an 8 inch dobsonian go on an eq5?

Yeah! It’s now do I buy the mak first or the dobsonian! the one thing that I dislike about the dobsonian is that it doesn’t counter the earths rotation so tracking at 200x magnification is difficult!

What was everyone’s first scope? What would be your one scope to rule them all? Under 250

I have either the evostar 90Eq or the starquest 102eq And the 6inch dobsonian ill probably choose the maksutov

The star quest 102mc is not collimatable should I be worried? Has anyone used this telescope?

Astro essentials make a mak to sct adaptor. If I buy this then a 1.25 inch Crayford would that work?

Yes I have heard far and wide about starguiders and was planning to get a 8mm. As for the finder I will change it these are later upgrades!

Yes after many question my brain and heart finally agree on the maksutov. It is neither a refractor nor a reflector but is both. It has all advantages of both designs and is small and portable! It was neither a dobsonian nor a large achro, the under dog Mak is the unpredicted champion of this three forum saga! Collimation is not so problematic anymore. Thank you all! Please if you have any tips I will definitely read them!

I understand but I’m not THAT clumsy ! Im the type of person who handles a good object with great care but extremely nervous so I make mistakes and call myself clumsy, (Ill most likely but the mount and telescope next to my bed as I sleep). I think it will with work wonders with me. It’s light and cute and fits the bill nicely any pro tips are gladly welcomed. The thing I don’t like a bout reflectors is there open tube design and how some are on dobsonian /no eq. Their weight!!. How coma affects images. I think Maksutovs are the perfect balance between refracting and reflector. It has both advantages however it has some downsides. Wow it’s amazing how long they hold collimation. I can write with a glass dip pen so I’m not to clumsy. I’m getting sidetracked I think it should now be called maksutov basics 101: Rule one: You are good unless you drop the telescope. A 3.3kg its is a lot lighter and compact than a 5kg 1m refractor lol

Yeah mostly planets so I don’t care much for 2 inch eyepieces just thought there was a major difference!

Hey, Which one is better? The mak by far has better mount but suffers from cool down and collimation? Mostly planetary but DSO is a nice bonus! mak is 127/1500 F11.83 evostar 120/1000 F8.33 What is the focuser and the diagonal and can they accept 2 inch eyepieces?
