Whilst we waited for the concrete to set, thought we should have a nice raised bed near the patio.

All in, roughly levelled and ready to set.

I opted for C30 and placed this 100mm thick on A386 steel rebar. The thing ain't going anywhere! I also cheaped out from the piping option and barrowed this through the house in a manic 30 minute stretch. Needed a friend to help out as had 3.5 tonnes to move. My wife almost divorced me when she saw the truck arrive, however we didn't spill ONE drop in the house!

My 5 year old and I's hand in the concrete after the pour.

Turns out I should have not used a 90degree bend for the conduit. Turned out alright in the end as we weren't putting an armoured cable down this bit so it didn't matter. PS much easier to put in the string at this stage, BEFORE the conduit is surrounded by hard concrete. Vacuum and wrapping tape worked well though to pull through a thread..

Leaves roughly 100mm for the concrete slab.

Hefting a ton of hardcore through the house didn't impress the wife. Made a bed of roughly 50mm, perhaps not enough but will give something for the concrete to bite into.

The space for the pier foundation - to be dug out more once the slab is in and set.

As above, using the posts as solid supports for the formwork!

The formwork ready for the concrete.. Decided to use 6x1 as had plenty of options for regular support. Worked fine.

Showing the strech the obsy will take. This fence runs E-W with S to the left.

We'll need a retaining wall where that raised bed was.. Decided to go with sleepers, following the 'wood' theme of the build. The posts are concreted in to ensure they stay there as access will be difficult once the build starts.. The sleepers were also painted with bitumen on the soil side to lengthen their life.

You can see the hole for the pier dug out to mark the spot (it gets bigger than this!)

Well, most of the soil gone, the big tree at the end meant I had to opt for a floating slab foundation for the obsy

Son's enjoying the first skip to be filled with soil.

The raised bed of regret - this was the start of 9 tons of heavy clay soil to be excavated by hand and dragging through the house..
