Question - related to looking after my purse.
I assume there are no issues using a Barlow with a Morph ?
Might look a bit strange towering on top of a barlow I suppose, but optically ?

    Thx

I have the Baader 2.25 barlow, Naturally it attaches perfectly to the morpheus ep range.

I currently have it up for sale as I have used it once.

No issues with the performance, I am just  happy with the magnification my ep range provides and have never needed to use the barlow.

I am not a very regular observer and def. not knowledgeable about the intricacies of EP's.  All I know is I wear glasses, I have significant short sightedness, very significant astigmatism, and also take a touch of prism in my prescription lenses.  I own all the Morpheus EP's and use them in my 200P.  I have no problems looking down any of them with my glasses on.  FWIW I have also never had problems observing without my glasses on as the focus of the EP seems to do outdo the need for most of the correction I get from my glasses.  However, I do tend to keep my specs on at the EP as it saves the faff of removing them.  What I have noticed is that are not too heavy.  The 200P drive mechanism (I have the star finder drive thingy in mine) doesn't seem to like too much weight and they seem to work well.  The cheapest way of buying them is to bide your time with the SGL classifieds.  I bought every single one of mine second-hand in mint condition!  FWIW they look lovely in a box too!

Great collecton including a cheeky Pentax chucked in for good measure.

A great idea regarding the second hand market, I am keeping my eyes open for the elusive 12.5mm - trouble is the morphs are so good they dont come up to often.

I should have said if you like the Morph 17.5 so much, then you should take it, Joe. I just depends on how tight you are on space.

BTW on space, if air travel I stick to 1.25-inch kit for space and weight reasons.

What about including a white light solar filter.

I too wondered about the minimum Morph content would mean we are off track on the thread. But at least @JOC is helping by posting that pic of her Morphs.

Talking morph or not, You are more than welcome here @JeremyS ha!

Truss tubes don't always equate to weight savings. The Skywatcher flextube dobs actually weigh a little more than the solid tube versions. They are more compact to store and move around though.

Very true, I own a 300p flex - lovely scope, But heavy, I have had lower back problems for the last year which has prevented me from bringing the scope out. I sometimes wish i had kept the 200p as it was light and compact enought to lift complete with base attached.

In the ideal world I need the 300p set up perminent in a dome, Under very dark skies, Oh and in rural Devon!! 🙂

However, I passed my APM 12.5mm Hi-FW around at a star party, and everyone saw the same thing I saw--Edge of Field Brightening (EOFB) in the last 20° of the field all the way around.

Alas, because it's a better eyepiece except for the EOFB, but I couldn't tolerate the EOFB and sold the eyepiece.

My dob is a 12.5" used with Paracorr II (effective f/ratio 5.75, FL 1826mm), and I got a chance to compare the 14mm and 12.5mm Morpheus extensively over a night (not for the first time).

In that scope, both the 14mm and 12.5mm Morpheus display zero field curvature--when the center is in focus, so is the edge.  I could focus at the edge and see focused star images in the center.

Bear in mind, the longer focal length of the dob and the field flattening characteristic of the Paracorr modifies what is seen in the eyepiece, so a short focal length refractor could be different in that regard.

I have a short focal length refractor, but my observing in that scope starts at 9mm and becomes smaller in focal length, with a lot of use of the 4.5mm Morpheus.

The 14mm has a bit of lateral astigmatism in the last 5° of field, and stars are stretched slightly at the field stop.  It is really far from center, however, and usually unnoticeable, as I don't typically watch objects drift out of the field as I did the other night.

I only noticed it in comparison to the 12.5mm, which is fast becoming my favorite eyepiece.

The 12.5mm maintained tiny pin-point stars to the very edge and had a slightly improved sharpness to the 14mm everywhere in the field.

Despite Ernest's measurements, the only way I could fault the 12.5mm was very slight chromatic issues in the star images at or near the edge.

But I could eliminate that by merely looking through the eyepiece at a slightly different angle.

I compared the image quality on many objects with a TeleVue 11mm Apollo, and if I saw any difference at all (other than magnification), it was that the 12.5mm Morpheus was slightly sharper.

Since seeing was mediocre, the increased magnification was likely to blame, as the 9mm Morpheus also displayed star images that were a bit softer.

The 12.5mm fast becoming your favorite ep, That is high praise considering the amount of eps you have tested!

  6. Afternoon all,

I have recently purchased the attached coma corrector and 43mm extension ring for my 300p

I just wanted to clarify the current set up. I have a Baader 2" click lock inserted in to the CC, This in turn is attached to the focuser.

Is there a correct spacing i need to achieve with this setup? I can move the CC in and out of the focuser but i am unsure of its optimal position.

Also Does CC change the focal lengh of my scope?

Any help on the best way to utilise the CC appreciated.

    Regards

    Baz

The 12.5 is a great ep as are the rest except for the 14 according to some of the reviews I have read. Its the only one I didn't buy, I mentioned in another post what I did buy after some thought and research.

I have the 14mm and enjoy the low power x107 magnification it provides in my 12" dob - the magnification difference for the 12.5mm would be x13 - I am not to interested in the slight magnification gain. I am quite intersted to know how it performs visually compared to the 14mm - Not to knock the 14mm as I enjoy using it, But many state that the 14mm is the weakest in the range.

  8. A question for the technical chaps on here, I have just been looking at the full range. Considering pulling the trigger on the 12.5mm!

One thing that struck me was how they all step down in size, Roughly in equal increments, With exception of the 12.5mm - what would make the 12.5 differ from the rest of the line up?

Also looking at the pictures, I assume the bottom half of the whole range below the rubber grip is exactly the same components,  And the focal length differences are made up in the longer/shorter top barrels?

Just an observation that interested me 🙂

Yes, I bought a few to play about with (I think I talked about it a bit in the other thread I posted) but ended up finding that one was too few, two too many. I ended up with my perfect setup as one M43 ring on all of my Morphs and APM EPs, with an additional two o-rings on the 4.5mm.

    20230812_175632.thumb.jpg.6c8adad445d1acf9da1dca597f405ea1.jpg

Interesting information regarding the M43 extension, I have not considered trying two of them. I sometimes have difficulty with eye placement on the 6.5mm - I might take an extension off of one of my other morphs and double up on the 6.5 to see if helps.

It only appears to be the 6.5 that I am having a few issues with.

Nice collection of EPs you have there, I had the 30mm UFF APM - I enjoyed using it but sold it as I woudl have preferred the 24mm that you have, I have kept my eyes open for one but no luck so far!

I have the full set of Baader Morpheus eyepieces and I have stopped looking for anything better. I find them sharp and clear and most of all really comfortable to use. The 17.5mm, 9mm and the 6.5mm stand out slightly over the other three IMO. I personally wouldn’t part with any of them.

I must admit, I am also content with the Morpheus range, I no longer feel the need to chage to something different. I will at some point add the final 12.5mm to my collection!

I don't know if it has been mentioned but the 6.5 Morph is no slouch either, check out its reviews.

I did have the 6.5 out for a short period last night. It provides me with a magnification of x230 in my 300p - A nice mid range power, It gave some great views of Vega & Arcturus,  I did find it to be a little blurry which I put down to my scope needing a collimation. The ep itself is certainly a great performer.

The morphs certainly have a huge viewing "window" and are extremely comfortable to use.

  12. Hi all,

I hope everyone are keeping well.

I managed a bit of time at the ep last night. A bounce around the usual prominent stars this time of year. Im still a big fan of the subtle glow of Arcturus & the bright White/Blue glow of Vega!

While looking at Cassiopeia with the naked eye I was fortuanate to have a white meteor flash across the sky and burn up. Only the third time I have seen this. Was it a meteor or "man made space junk"? 🙂

Enjoyed an hour at the ep - Collimation could do with some attention, But thats a headache for another day.

    Cheers

Drifting back to the topic, the M43 extensions have been super helpful for me with eye placement on the Morpheus. The 4.5mm in particular has been tricky to get right, but I eventually solved it using a combination of extension plus rubber eyecup plus 2x rubber hairbands. I need to replace them with proper o-rings when I can but they work well enough for now.

    20220805_151111.thumb.jpg.ec56ebc0d5a0b8c4db82757e25ec65cc.jpg

I quite like that solution. I two find the 4.5 a little fussy for eye placement.

I tend to put up with it as it doesnt get a whole lot of use in my 12" dob. I am intending to use it for Uranus & Neptune viewing in the coming weeks and will bear the hair band trcik in mind.

I was wondering anyone using their Morpheus eyepieces with the binoviewer?

How does the Morpheus behave on bright object like the Moon?

    Morning,

As I understand it, Quite a few on here use a pair of  17.5mm Morphs for bino viewing. Hopefully someone can confirm back on the viewing experience.

Great to see you observing again 😁

In answer to a question on another thread the Morpheus 12.5 that I own holds its head up alongside my 10,7,5 Pentax XWs.

    Thanks Alan,

Good to be back on here again. Its been to long.

Hopefully i will get out more regular again going forward.

Hearing good things about the 12.5 alround, I can see me caving in and purchasing!

    Cheers

I have a 12.5mm on its way to me, seemed to have good reviews and is very well priced compared with others. If I get on with it, I may try the 17.5mm too. It will be interesting to compare with the Leica Zoom and see whether I stick with the convenience of the Zoom start using fixed focal length eyepieces more.

    Hi Stu,

Do you still haev the 12.5mm Morph in your collection?

    Cheers

Good to see you out there again @Barry-W-Fenner, the OCs in Cassiopeia are lovely aren’t they, so many to choose from.

    Thanks Stu,

Life has certainly been very hectic. Getting under the stars and slowing and unwinding for a couple of hours was just what the doctor ordered and a reminder of how great this hobby is.

If all goes well I will be out again this weekend!

Hope you are all good mate.

  18. Hi all

I hope you are all keeping well.

It has been a while since I managed to get out under the stars. We have recently had the LED street light conversion (finally) and I was keen to see if the slightly darker sky had an impact on the viewing.

Truthly the jury is still out, I did notice the detail in Jupiter seemed better than I can remember. The ring Nebular also appeared brighter. Andromeda was its usual white fuzz.

I moved on to a tour of the open clusters around Cassiopeia - As usual they didnt dissapoint, The Double cluster is a thing of beauty.

All in all it was nice just to get out under the stars and have a general look about in all directions!

Hopefully I will get more time out now the darker skies are returning.

    Cheers

    Baz
