    There's a download for Ubuntu 14.04 on 32-bit ARM here: http://www.openastroproject.org/downloads/

If you have a later Ubuntu release then there's a possibility that it will need to be built from scratch as I don't have anything later installed to build on at the moment, but it isn't a total nightmare to do that.

    James

I think my version of Ubuntu mate is 15...something....only installed a month or two ago..

  2. I know this is an old thread, but I am now using an rpi3 to control all my kit, and Indi library and Kstars / Ekos for my deep sky imaging, but wanted a Linux based software for planetary work and came across this...so firstly would this suit my needs, secondly, as I am fairly new to Linux, how would I go about loading and using on my Ubuntu mate based rpi3...

    Many thanks :)

Yeah, the only difference to the entire texts are the word 'astro' substituted for 'baader'.
To be honest, I've read this thread numerous times and the only thing I know for certain is I've saved £60 :)

Yes you can save that £60...

as for the rest, the normal Astro mod as I call it, which you will be getting with the camera you link to, will not have any blurring and can be used with Autofocus with a lens, because the guy at cheapasteophotography, Juan, shims the sensor to counteract the removal of the filter to regain auto focus, he does this as part of the filter removal mod on the cameras before he sells them.

Now if you were to do the mod yourself you would not do that, hence having a blurry image when using autofocus after the camera Astro mod, but only with a camera lens, not using a telescope...

    HTH :)

    LPF-1:
    Front Filter
    Dust removal filter
    Piezo element filter
    IR/UV block filter
    H-alpha pass filter
    Larger filter
    Pinkish looking filter
    Anti-alias filter (1)

    LPF-2:
    Rear Filter
    Color limiting filter
    White Balance filter
    IR/UV block filter
    H-alpha block filter
    Smaller filter
    Bluish looking filter
    Anti-alias filter (2)

    I don't like the LPF-1 retained.
Even it blurring the image slightly, I just don't like it.
    But, that's just me :icon_biggrin:

It doesnt blur the image, persay, the reason for a slightly out of focus image after the mod is only with autofocus using a lens, as this will be slightly out due to a piece of glass being removed from the imaging train, but with a telescope not at all an issue... :)

Thanks all for your replies. Looks like asking the question saved myself £60, remind me I owe you a pint when we meet at an astro party somewhere! :)

Yes, the second filter left in the camera has good IR cut, hence why it is left in place, so nothing else is needed, Unkess you have bad Light pollution, then you will need an LP filter, and if you go for the clip in type (or any CLS for that matter) for canon cameras, you only need the standard CLS version and not the CLS CCD as the difference between these two filters is the more expensive one has built in IR cut, which you will not need.

Yes it works great.  You have to make a lead up as the focuser socket on the Pegasus is RJ12, but it is really easy as Pegasus give you the pin outs on their web site.  I just bought a standard RJ12 flat lead 2m long, cut one end off and soldered on a D sub socket.  The 2m lead was enough to make 2 leads.

Took 20 minutes and focuser works a treat.

    Apologies @PhotoGav

Is the lead the same one as used with the Hub and there own motor assembly, as I already have one of those.. just wondered if the wiring in the DB9 plug would be the same..

The Esprit 100 really is excellent for the money in my opinion Gav. You could certainly do far worse.

I use mine with the SW dedicated FF and it provides a very flat field across my APS-H sensor, which is only just short of full frame, but I do need to use 2" filters on that.

The stock focuser is very good, and using the Lakeside works a treat on it.

I really can't fault it for the money and wouldn't part with mine.

Below is a pic of mine with the Lakeside on, and one mounted and ready for work. Also is a single 1200s sub of the Pelican (Ha with only a brief stretch & curves) to give you an ideal of the FOV with the APS-H sensor, and the flatness across that FOV.

I honestly don't think you would be disappointed and, as with the Tak, you only have to look to see how few there are available used to give you an indication of how good they are.

Please forgive me as slightly off topic, but just noticed in your image above of your scope and set up, you have a Pegasus hub, can you tell me if the focuser controller built into that works ok with the Lakeside motor on your focuser..??

Again sorry all for the off topic question, it won’t happen again... :)

Thanks but as i've said earlier in the thread i only had one bolt in(one by the polar scope). i'm not even able to tweek it, as soon as it goes tight up against the collar it will bend before moving the mount a fraction. The mount  moves ok by hand loaded and unloaded.

To me its like going out in a brand new car and the steering wheel bends instead of the car turning at the first corner, i wouldn't go to the store and buy a new upgraded steering wheel or even entertain for a second putting up with it. The car would go straight back to the dealer and told where to shove it especially if he told me to take the weight off the wheels in order to turn.

I Don't mean to offend and i guess i'll be slammed or hung drawn and quartered for saying this but i'm amazed how many have put up with this problem for so long.

I totally agree with you....I would be the same, just hope you get it sorted and are satisfied with the outcome.. :)

    What a great idea.

That wedge has been around for a few years now and it is on the fourth or fith revision, it looks superb, but I think there are a few issues with it, hence it has not taken off like it should have done, Modern Astronomy also used to sell them, (and may still) he will know a lot more about the past issues and whether they are all sorted now..I personally love the idea and have thought about getting one, but for a permanent set up that only gets polar aligned or at least checked once or twice a year, it’s a lot of money.... :)

  10. Surely it’s obvious what the problem is, whay does it have to be returned for them to see that......I have dealt with this retailer before, I wont mention there name, but my experience with them was terrible to be honest, I don’t trust them one bit, they seem to be very lacking of experience, and I certainly would not but a belt modded Mount from them....as that mod is for someone with good skills and patience...

i've boxed it all back up already, they are going to pick it up and take it back and look what the problem is.

The thing is if you send back that means it’s going to be chucked about by a courier, and when it gets there they will look at it and say “oh yes the bolts are crap” then they will offer to send it back to you again with a new set of bolts and yet again the courier chucks it about and it could get back in a worse state and cause you more hassle..

so wouldn’t it be best to ask them to cover the cost of a new set of bolts instead of sending back and potentially having more issues, if they refuse then, (would be very petty of them to)  just send back but, then get a refund and go elsewhere.... :]

You are cutting of your nose to spite the face. Skywatcher are not going to change, for the sake of £25 you buy ready made stainless steel replacements. If you don't you will have the hassle of sending it back, trying to get a replacement or your money back. It's more hassle then it's worth in my opinion. At the end of the day spend £25 and you have a great mount.

Or get the retailer to spend £25 and send you the bolts for free....?.?
