Could it be windows update related? I’ve had issues in the past with EU specific versions on windows updates not recognising my dslr

I thought so too, as this problem first appeared after an update, but I haven’t updated since the last restore and if still failed to connect once after I had restarted from my last successful session (if that makes sense?)

    cheers

You could try clearing the USB ports, Google for instructions, quicker than a system restore.

    Dave

I’ll give that a go Dave

I have swapped USB ports and although the laptop installs drivers and recognises the camera and says it is ready for use, it still cannot be seen when trying to open Artemis.
however I haven’t done what you suggest and anything is worth a go!
    cheers

  3. Hi all

I have a setup that has worked for me for over a year now but occasionally my laptop refuses to see my atik 460.
In the past when this has happened I restart everything and it works, very rarely I have been forced to do a system restore and that also has worked however, the last 3 or 4 times out I have been forced to restore every time to get my laptop to see my atik!
it’s an older fairly basic Acer laptop Running widows 7, I’m using Artemis capture and everything is going through a mount hub pro.
I have had the camera on its own usb Input on the laptop and through the hub, I have changed the usb lead but when it won’t see the camera, nothing I do changes this unless I do a system restore.

The laptop is left outside (under cover) when imaging.

    does anyone have any suggestions??
    Many thanks

  4. Hi Rodd

having lurked around on this forum for the past 10 years wishing I was capable of producing images such as this and  Steve’s I can see how wonderful both images are in their own merit.
You both have slightly different styles and if you were to put them side by side and ask 100 people which they prefer, I think the room could be evenly split.

I too kicked myself as I felt I had  overcooked my last image (rosette) once I saw Steve’s IC 1871 and then John’s IC1396! They appear to have an effortless clarity that I would love to be able to emulate.

Having said that, I love the composition of your heart of soul, The impact of the colour and the clarity of detail, it’s stunning!
Basically, I get where you’re coming from but honestly, hold your head up high! This is a cracking photo that is unique to you and there will be more than a few people here thinking, “I’m gonna try that!”

    thanks for sharing

This image certainly has the wow factor; someday in the distant future  I hope to be at this level.

    Nice work.

    Thanks Andy for your message!

It doesn’t seem that long ago, I was looking at images like mine and wondering if I’d ever be able to produce anything like it! In fact I seemed stuck for years.
It was finally swapping my DSLR for a cooled mono camera that forced me to learn more techniques that have helped my acquisition of data and processing skills that I have progressed, also there is a wealth of information and helpful folk on this site always willing to give you a nudge in the right direction!
There are so many talented imagers on this site I know I’ve still got loads to learn!

    thanks again

This is a wonderfully detailed image - very nice indeed!

Thanks steppenwolf for your kind words.

I think if I process it again sometime, maybe if it stops raining and I can finally get more data, I think I would probably tone it down a tad to make it look a bit more natural.

there are some fantastic subtle images on here that I find inspirational

    Thanks again

So did the Atik improve on the clarity & resolution when comparing to the DSLR at the same focal length?

    It did.

I’ll try and find some comparable photos of the same object with the same optical system so you can judge yourself.

I’ll look through my files this weekend

    Cheers

One thing I plan to improve next is the crispness of my images at 2032mm focal length.

The 40D already being 1.16"/pixel on the C8 at 2032mm fl and consistently tracking at RMS below 1", it might not make a difference and this might simply be the limit of my equipment???

The clarity and sharpness in your image is better than anything I managed when I was imaging with DSLR  and my 12 inch SCT at 3048mm Fl  sometimes with a 6.3FF/FR, I was always trying to get a sharper image.
I considered using adaptive optics device but I never took the plunge and instead I bought a second hand Atik 314l+, I was astounded by the difference in clarity and detail and wondered why I had left it so long (10 years with DSLR) Although it has presented many more challenges with filters, filter wheels etc It was a bit like starting again from scratch, but I don’t think I could go back unless I’m travelling with a portable setup (which I can’t afford to do since buying all the extras!)
All I need now is clear skies, which Seem much more illusive

    Cheers

    Hello Bryan,

First I started imaging the galaxy through the UV/IR filter and ended up with subs 8x90s, 7x150s, 7x300s, 6x450s, 6x600s but they were on the overexposed side. The following night I used the Neodymium filter, AKA " Moon & Skyglow" filter instead of the UV/IRCut filter and did 1x900s, 1x660s, 2x600s, 11x540s, 1x420s, 4x300s @ ISO1600, totalling exposure time of 5h 41m & 30s.

I did stack all subs to process the final image.

    MG

    Thanks for the reply MG

Thats a lot of subs with a varied time scale and would present a challenge Calibrating and stacking (for me, that is)

Did you match all those lights with darks?

    cheers

    nicely done !

There's a couple of cool features in there that don't often make it into Rosette pics:

    Capture.PNG.63fb2088b4dd6008d992027dfb82c850.PNG

the smaller circled is a Herbig Haro object, Rosette HH1, they only discovered it in 2004 (https://www.noao.edu/outreach/press/pr04/pr0403.html).  You can see one jet but not the other.

The larger one is a so-called elephant's trunk - they are caused when a knot of heavy density gas is able to withstand the strong solar winds from the stars in the centre of the nebula better than the lower density gas around it and protects the gas behind it in its shadow, causing the pillar.  However, what's special about this one is the helical nature - magnetic field lines and electrical current flowing along the axis of the pillar have cause the material to swirl around it, creating those 4 or more intertwined helixes that you can just about make out

edit: you seem to have mirror-imaged it though, I knew there was something bugging me  😉

    Thanks for the information glowingturnip!
That’s fascinating! And to think 2004! Wow! there is still stuff to discover!!
oh, and yeah, sorry about the Mirrored image...6E444744-87E7-496D-B3D2-E9851AEFE93A.thumb.jpeg.78003c07920982eba03636ff6930eebf.jpeg

    is that better?
    thanks again

Thank you! Exactly like you - my kit has been under a Telegizmo cover for the last week...looks clear tonight for a few hours, just hope I don't find that spiders have made a home in my ASI1600 when I take the covers off later!

Just thought I’d mention, I keep a small dehumidifier under the cover too and as it’s on a home made pier instead of a tripod I am able to create a reasonable seal around the bottom, It has made a difference to things decaying with rust or misting up etc, it was a £40 eBay purchase.
I am hoping to get home early enough to continue gathering data on my latest project, I’m trying to do my first mosaic, just a 2 panel of the soul nebula.
    cheers

Thank you! My imaging time is being severely limited by the cloudy winter...but the show must go on!

It has been pretty miserable so far this winter.
I don’t have an observatory but my kit is outside under a telegizmos 365 cover so I can set up in minutes and take advantage of a clear spell I have a neighbour who caught the bug from me, he has to set up from scratch each session and won’t do so unless it’s going to stay clear all night!

nice composition BTW, thanks for sharing!

    cheers

That's an excellent explanation - thank you.  So part of the skill in this sort of thing is choosing colours that are complimentary to the desired effect of the artist.  Here you have an image that predominates in Umber/apricot/blue, but if I understand correctly you could just as easily chosen pink and purple or any other combination.  Thus, a number of images of the same area of space by different artists whilst all being of the same objects can all look different!  I think that makes it a lot of fun as a concept - You could almost imagine something like those pop-art image where you have a montage of the same image, but all done in different colours!

The pop art idea could be great fun!
The colour palette often used is referred to as the Hubble palette as it was the colours used with many of the stunning images produced by the team at NASA as it helps enhance the gas distribution, this is often referred to as SHO, S = Sii H = Ha O = Oiii gas emissions in that order for Red, Green and Blue, but the colour green isn’t favoured for some reason and is often changed to a golden orange red colour that people find more pleasing.

    I’m glad you like it
