  1. I've been going through my data for the night of the 6th, and as I thought, from my location the conditions were slightly better just before the transit.

Here is the result of 4 RGB runs with de-rotation. I have deliberately not pushed the processing too far, in order to keep things as natural as possible.

    Hope you like it

That's a stonking good image Harvey and I also like this colour palette. Jupiter is really colourful isn't it, I love to view it at high magnification through an eyepiece and better still though binoviewers with a pair of 19mm panoptics (mag approx x200), though haven't got those out this year yet. It's truly a beautiful object.

    Thanks Geof

For me it's looking a little over-done in terms of the colours and processing, starting to look a little false, but I don't meant to be negative, we each have our own preferences and you've captured some great detail in the clouds. Io has totally knocked it out of the park though - great capture of surface details. It looks like a mini-Mars! 👍

Appreciate your comments Neil. I have 2 laptops, on 1 of them the saturation looks minimal, and on the other, it looks a little overcooked. It was a tough call, as I thought I had calibrated them both. I am also finding that the colours are looking different depending on which program I am looking at them in.

    Cheers

Thanks both, I probably also wouldn't image in those conditions, but It's the 1st time I've caught the GRS early in it's transition and the seeing was pretty good, so with Europa also in play, I just kept going. As it's been said before, it's the seeing that really matters for planetary imaging, so good seeing with poor transparency always trumps great transparency in poor seeing. There were a few times when I was ready to pack up, but looking over the observatory wall kept promising another clear patch, so well what can I say, I just kept going.....

Of course Geof! I wasn't being critical, I really admire your patience and enthusiasm, and as you say, you never really know if it's gonna get better or not. I look forward to hopefully seeing the Gifs.

  5. Hi Guys

Well, it's a repro of sorts, but with increased data. I did mention to Stuart, - (Space Cowboy), that I had more available data to add to my previous efforts. So here is the result, with double the original data. There are now 10 individual images, that were combined in Winjupos, instead of the initial 5.

The image has become less noisy due to this, with detail I think that is easier on the eye. Personally, I think I prefer this colour pallette. would be interesting to have your thoughts?

    Thanks for looking

    Clear Skies!

As I said the the CN forum this is a fabulous capture Harvey! One of the best UK shots this year for sure.

On this particular image I can see some artifacts on Jupiter, possibly image compression as the text is distorted?

Thanks Stuart. That's interesting. I think I did some minor denoising after posting on CN. That's probably why the text is distorted, - I was just too lazy to write it up again, - LOL.

This particular image was just 5 no 40 second captures combined in Winjupos. So, I think the artifact you are mentioning is slight edge distortion due to stretching. I did try to remove it using the deringing function in Registax, but couldn't. I do have another 5 captures that I could still combine in Winjupos, but am still working and have been time short. I will get round to doing it soon though.

    Best wishes

That's lovely, how long does the 11“ take to reach thermal equilibrium?

It's pretty quick actually, I generally put a fan on at the bottom of the OTA. What makes a huge difference is that I have the whole tube wrapped in silver foil.

    Thanks for your comment

  8. Hi Guys

Not posted much on here lately due to losing my account credentials.

I thought I'd share with you an image of Jupiter taken with the 11" Mak under steady seeing/transparency on the night of the 15/16th October. much has been said on here about correct sampling, - my ideal f ratio for sampling is around F15. The live view was that good that I decided to put on a 2.5X TV power-mate  which would give me around F22. I personally have found that I get my best images in good seeing when oversampled.

I had originally set up for mono imaging, but had the settings wrong on the new camera, so couldn't obtain a frame rate of more than 1.5 fps. I transferred over to the ASI 462 coloured cam at the last minute, so pleased that the session wasn't a disaster!

    Regards
