  1. Gina what size is the dome on this?

I am looking at building one myself as i have just had a bargain on ebay for a zwo camera.

thinking of a short section of 4" soil pipe capped at bottom with a weather cap on top is that about the size of it?

Funny you should say that. I won the French National loto eight weeks ago, still waiting for any kind of conformation or pay out. I got three numbers, with a pay out of 20 euros. I have to send the ticket to head office, with ID, a bank pay in slip via registered post that costs 5.30 euro. Seven weeks after and I am still dreaming about a bag of gravel or two.🤣

3 numbers more than me :)

yeah hence am sorta following that route too, I have a thread "El cheapo sky camera" if you can find it, shows what I put together.

I'd say at £96 that one's pretty expensive for what it is, given a cctv IP board camera is in the £24 region with a fisheye lens, would just need the housing. OK you can't pan/zoom but would you need to? Mine stay in a fixed aim unless I decide to adjust that manually and give 150-170 degree view from a 2.5mm or 2.1mm  lens. That lens likely would only go to 120 degree and the extra elements to enable the zoom range would probably not be good for astro, too much loss if nothing else.

If that one is something you think worth a go, factor in swapping out the dome for a clear one if you can find a suitable one, else you'll see almost nothing at night :)

i was only really using it as an example i have looked at quite a few that have clear domes so the hardware side of it looks useful. i will checkout your thread as well thanks.

Would depend what you'd like to see, daytime sky or night and stars. Likely it'll not be able to slow the shutter below 1/25s so would need video capture and stacked to get much of an image. 3.5mm won't give a wide fisheye and the lens likely will be relatively slow (f2.x or slower). Add that the dome is tinted and that'll wipe any chance of capturing stars other than the really bright ones at best.

Also and perhaps more importantly, CCTV domes aren't intended to be used dome upward, even if IP66 rated, so you'd probably need to adapt it to suit to ensure it resists water ingress. I rebuilt a pendulum dome type and so far that's working pretty well, tho the smaller dome similar to this is now showing condensation inside after I moved it recently, one more job when weather permits.

    interesting though!

  5. I had a similar issue with my Starlight express costar

sometimes tracked ok in phd2 but would lockup and crash the software if i did long single exposures or the deadpixel routine

also sharpcap and the costar software would crash pretty much all the time but Maxim would be fine.

turned out to be a faulty usb chip on the main board of the device

its on its way back to me from Starlight express now so hopefully all sorted

You can remove the LPF# 2 filter, leaving the #1 filter to filter IR, protect the sensor, and retain the dust shaking function.

Autofocus with Canon lenses will be wrong, not a problem if you are only going to connect to a scope, focusing with LiveView will be correct.

Or replace the #2 with a Baader filter, or plain glass, to retain autofocus.

Or remove #1 and #2, a Full Spectrum mod, not suitable for refractors because of IR star bloat.

    I have a 200PDS newtonian

it looks like a Baader is roughly the same price as a clear glass filter so which would be better for galaxies?

  7. Picked up a cheap 1300D off ebay and its going to get the full mod treatment

so for the uneducated (me) is it better to get a Baader BCF filter mod or go with a complety clear unfiltered glass?

i will be using it for astro only and want to concentrate on galaxys and nebulae

    thank you

  8. Hi all i have the potential of obtaining a Canon EOS 2000D to replace my nikon has anyone any experience with this camera?

i will probably want to remove one of the filters so the ability to do this is also a question and only use it for astro

hope you clever ones can help

    cheers

  9. Well i finally got to use my new pier and spent some time last night getting some images.

also had a huge schoolboy error in that my camera was set to jpg only so nothing raw at all which i was pretty gutted after 4 hours messing about.

anyway quite pleased with the jpgs of M81/2 and M33
