Doesn't sound too nice. A few months ago I fell off my bike, luckily only grazes (albeit rather large ones). I can still see where the damage was, much more obvious on my side and elbow than my hand though. Did you come straight off? When I crashed, I was lucky that it took about 7 seconds to come off the bike - enough time for me to slow down quite a bit which is why the injuries weren't very severe.

Atter dark (but with proper lights on), autumn leaves covering wet chalk in a gully. Front wheel slid under me, landed hard on a chalk edge. All happened very quickly.

That route is now off limits for night riding.
