it seems like a large area where you can pull into off the road. it is not an entrance into anywhere, just a large flat area of concrete off the road , so nobody to ask permission to use really. I will take my large bino's and set up and see how it goes next time i'm free.
  3. I dropped a client off in Wingrave the other night at about 11.30pm . On my way home through the back roads I came across a huge concreted semi circular area on the side of the road , so I pulled in and got out to have a look at the night sky. I was absolutely gobsmacked by how crystal clear the night sky was. I was a long way from any street lights or towns and the seeing conditions were perfect. I must have been there for a good twenty minutes and not a single car passed by. There were great views through 360 degrees at 10 degrees above the horizon. It was quiet and peaceful and a perfect place to set up and spend an enjoyable evening under the stars. I marked it on my satnav and was home in 40 mins. Looks like I have found myself a little spot to call my own !!
  4. It is actually 13.2 metres long making it more visible
  5. I am considering a 152 mm widefield refractor on an alt az mount for portable viewing but I do tend to drift back to the 190 MN . Do any of you learned chaps have any opinions on using the above purely for visual or is not suitable as I know it is optimised for AP ? i remember reading a while back that a couple of members use them for visual and have heard good things apart from collimation needing to be 100% , if that also applies for visual use.
  6. By all accounts the mirrors are excellent , and I realise that the ota's are not mass produced , but for that reason then you would assume the quality control would be top notch. I would love to own a VX12 and would quite happily buy a new one , and OO dobs tick all the right boxes for me as far as design and portability goes but at twice the price of an equivalent dob I would want it near perfect and from the many posts with regard to problems SGL gets it does put me off.
  7. Posts like this do make me think twice about OO
  8. Or he has fallen into it never to be seen again !!!!
  9. Cheap and cheerful http://www.harrisontelescopes.co.uk/acatalog/Revelation-Premium-16--Truss-Dobsonian-Telescope.html Looks a bit of a lump though !!
  10. You have also got the Meade Lightbridge 16" that can be had for under $2000 http://www.opticsplanet.com/meade-16in-lightbridge-f-4-5-truss-tube-dobsonian-telescope.html Also the Orion USA 16" http://www.optcorp.com/orion-xx-16g-go-to-truss-dobsonian-telescope.html Not sure how much these are in the states but they normally go in $ what we pay in £ http://www.firstlightoptics.com/dobsonians/sky-watcher-stargate-450p-truss-tube-dobsonian.html Good luck
  11. When I look at a supplier review I have noticed that all the topics are locked. Is there a reason for this as it would be nice to be able to add a comment to a topic.
  12. I think it was a10" and as you say everything worked beautifully
  13. I saw this at Altair Astro's stand at Astrofest and I was impressed by the build quality and finish . Looks like a nice bit of kit though probably not cheap !! http://www.altairastro.com/product.php?productid=16837&cat=269&page=1
  14. My original plan was to get a Altair Astro 152 mm Wide Field Refractor on a Sky tee 2 or something similar for grab n go viewing but I am now looking at the VX mount with a Starsense attached to make what little time I have at the eyepice a bit more productive. I do like like the idea of simple manual alt az set up but the VX with a Starsense does seem appealing and does open up the possibility of later on dabbling with some basic AP .
  15. I see the price of XW's have increased by approx 10% on the FLO site but still not bad compared to Widescreen Centre who knock them out at £349 !!! http://www.firstlightoptics.com/pentax.html
  16. I think i've got one tucked away in the under stairs cupboard. Hold on and I'll have a look !!!
  17. Thanks for the replies . I think I will go for the Sabre Mount. The two I tried at Astrofest dids seem very smooth and easy to move around and unfortunately nobody had a Sky Tee 2 to compare.
  18. I like the idea of the slo mo controls on the Sky tee 2 as opposed to the push to set up of the Altair Sabre mount , but was wondering if they are comfortable or easy to use when there is a large frac mounted on it as they seem a little akward to get too while viewing. Does anyone have any experience of this ? i am looking at mounting a 152 mm Achro on one. http://www.tringastro.co.uk/starwave-152mm-f59-achromat-refractor-7921-p.asp Thanks
  19. I was looking forwards to seeing the new Skywatcher Stargate 450 truss Dob and was surprised to see that nobody brought one along. I would have thought Skywatcher would have been keen to show it off especially asI Explore Scientific had their 16" truss dob on show. A little dissappointing.
  20. I went on the Fri. Not as many dealers on show as last year.
