Very good idea for a challenge... Enter the cmos

Same Set-up as mine (with the atik 460ex. only had a few nights last week so was mostly fiddling with things. Great to see so many good images with this little lens though. Gives me hope

I spoke to Altair Astro about the Ascent 102 and their response was "On the optics, I’m not actually sure because we use a group of companies to make them and an assembly facility and there are different grades of optics available".
Not sure what to make of that so will have to wait for the reviews. @david_taurus83 just bought one so hopefully we'll get a first light soon.
I'm making a beeline for them at PAS but also have the ED-R in my sights now.
2Word salad. A whole lot going on but nothing of substance

A very confusing process made possible thanks to your ability to communicate via the written word. I shall give it a go when I finally get some data worthy of more than just a quick levels/curves tweak.
Thanks for taking the time to experiment with this and then sharing your findings.

Doh, Absolutly brilliant, nice spot; never even clocked that. ??
I've never done that... well not this week anyway

Don't worry too much Tim, It's an 11 year old thread. I'd hope it's sorted by now

Let's all unite against the common enemy - the Judean people's front.
I think you’ll find it’s the people’s front of judea ?

I hope the equipment used is given consideration as well as the final result.
In future, I think it is important that ALL challenges make it very explicit what their target audience is in the title.
I would like to see ones chosen specifically intended to be for beginners, or at least thought out to provide a level playing field.
One example might be limiting sub length and/or aperture ratio.
I think a competition for compact/bridge/phone cameras might even tempt some of the visual astronomers to the dark side or encourage those of use getting a bit more experience to slim things down a bit.
Are you thinking what I'm thinking? It's time for common sense. The challenge of our times is to encourage more participants, so perhaps the next moves forward need to go back to basics so all you need is a strong and stable tripod.
we've had 30 sec subs before.

Is this strictly RGB with no luminance allowed?
I'm assuming Lum is fine as long as it's not taken with a Ha (Narrowband) filter. I'm prepared to be corrected though

This is one of the most toxic subjects you'll find on the imaging forum. You will hear very strong technical arguments from mono users but at the end of the day it's what happens in practice that counts. I use mono coz my LP is pretty bad so I tend to shoot nb. For broadband under U.K. Skies I might be tempted to go for colour as you get all rgb with every frame.

This is such a good idea!
I have never imaged a satellite before so challenge accepted.
Does the challenge come with some free clear skies?

Soooo I am in the process of capturing an animated GIF of Vesta, this is ongoing and started last December and will finish when I get bored waiting for clear skies.
Will it be OK if some of it is within the dates ?
Dave
nope. gotta be ALL taken within the specified time slot I'm afraid. otherwise we'd be seeing 100hrs taken last yr with an adittional 10 min sub taken within the time slot.

Smashing! 5 minute subs seem a little long, I thought the whole point of these new CMOS chips was that your could take lots of very short exposures, rather than the more traditional method of 10/15 longer subs?
Theory's great John but at the end of the day, the proof is in the puddin' and this is a very tasty pud. 1 hr imaging time! How short can we truly expect?

bit jealous James. It's a 9 or 12 pane mosaic just to image the soul with my kit . Lucky beggar

I wish these hadn't landed ........ I've jumped one way (increase in focal length) but have been tempted to jump the other way (shorter focal length) for some time but there was nothing out there apart from the FSQ 85 that hit the spot and I'd already burnt my fingers with one of those!
Darn it, it matches the FLT 98 as well ..........
Nah mate, go for those filters you want

Interesting that the only reason I saw this is that it was reported for being in the wrong section.
