Not even close. More capture time allows a shorter exposure a higher frame rate. (because of SNR) Which helps beat seeing. It also enables via a large stack rate. Much stronger sharpening on programs like Astro surface. Which will 100% reveal more detail. Then any minimalist technique. Under poor seeing recently i managed to get a level of detail using this technique that looked like it was taken in reasonable seeing. The technique also alluded others detail wise on the same night. The result was easy to see its superiority. For the reasons outlined the law of diminishing returns is misleading.

Sorry to jump in, so does astro surface just replace registax in your processing?

  2. Finally had a go with derotating some images in winjup. Takes me a while to figure these things out 🙄

Weathers so awful, but managed to get a few goes at Mars on the 28th, really hard to get focus as the jetstream was bouncing it all over the place as usual.

5 avi's of 4mins. Setup- 250p, 2.5x rev barlow, QHY5-462c with IR-cut. 1st is the combined 2nd is one of the single subs

I know its still overprocessed & still trying to get the colour balance right but enjoying the learning process just not the stinking weather 🤦‍♂️

    Thanks for looking

    Thanks for the comment.

I have no issue with my pipp. I also shoot at 300fps and I  regularly get 60-70000 frames. I use the default quality settings and vary between 60-80% of the frames. Is it worth uninstalling and reinstalling it in case of a change in a setting you can't remember?

Will try that thanks Kon 👍

  4. Lovely images Kon.

Glad you picked up the smaller polar cap I had that & thought it was due to the jetstream bouncing the image all over the place 👍

I presume you use Pipp to centre the image & quality control. Do you find that no matter how big the file is it won't let you keep more than 40k frames in quality estimation? Only ask as I've tried a higher frame rate of 400+(because of the dreadful conditions) which gives over 100k to put into pipp but when using the quality options it won't let me use more than 40k.

  5. Lovely clear night down on the IOW thought better get the scope out, but as usual seeing wasn't that great, really struggled to get clean focus, maps showed the jetstream was below us but there was still a wobbly flow......😠

Anyway managed a couple of 4 min avi's before the mist rolled in, they are a little clearer but still not great & a little over sharpened! 2 images 10 mins apart.

    setup- NEQ6, 250p, x2.5 barlow, QHY5 462c, UV IR-cut,

Excellent images if that's your first attempt. Some very nice details.

For the ring you could select and fill it with same background colour.

Thanks Kon, have to be honest I did try Mars many years ago 🙄 this is the first time with a proper camera.

    Thanks for the advice 👍

Excellent images. As @Kon says, to get rid of the ring artefact, just select the planet in PS, Affinity, or what ever image processing tool you prefer, then invert to select the background and fill with the same colour.

Thanks geoflewis, will have a go at that.

In case you don't have any editing programs I had a quick dabble for you.

    Hope you don't mind ?

    Really nice Mars.

Love it 😀, I'll have to learn how to do that myself

  7. Once again the stinking jetstream sat right on top of us, misty but really surprised to get a small ammount of detail. Well chuffed!

    250p, NEQ6, QHY5 462c, 3min avi's

P.S- Anyone know how to get rid of the rings around Mars after using wavelets? Can't see them on my laptop but plugged into the TV & they really stood out thanks.

Nice pic 👍 In my pics that brown band about 2/3 of the way up always more red-purple, maybe I need to play around more with RGB correction (that said, I've never been to Jupiter so hard to know what colour is correct! 😂)

Newbie question - how can you tell about the jetstream, what do you look for? I get the general idea about "seeing" and atmospheric turbulence, and the Clear Outside app tries to tell me how good or bad it is, but beyond this what are the telltales?

Some can tell by just looking outside no idea how!

I find as soon as you get Jupiter on screen even before you start focusing etc it's bouncing around all over the place. Also when its slightly out of focus you can see the violent (obvious at the moment🤦) steam of flow from the Jetstream, it's a bit like a strong current in a river.

You can look at the Jetstream forecast online (Google search) to get an idea of what to expect.

  9. Had to have a go last night, first time in ages had a little bit of clear sky inbetween the wind & mist. Seeing looked slightly better but...... as I turned the camera on- yes you guessed it the sky was boiling under the blooming jetstream AGAIN!

Anyway got a little detail come through even though the pipp videos were jumping around all over the place. Still getting used to processing with the new camera, probably to noisy still, really can't wait to have a go on a still clear night, I can but dream.

    A few from last night with 10" reflector, QHY5-462c, 2min AVI's
