Hello @LunarRob The 8” Dobsonian is very capable, you have made a good choice whichever one you buy. Imaging is definitely a possibility - checkout the images produced by @Kon using an 8” Dobsonian in the planetary imaging section.

If you want to do planetary and stay portable then the next step up would be a 4” refractor or a 6” Maksutov. Nice drawing @josefk If it’s any consolation at the moment I can only occasionally make out the extreme edges of the Cassini division in my 4” refractor when seeing co-operates.
