hello everyone, would like some advice please, I have just purchased a sky watcher explorer 130p a z go to telescope and would like to know if this is a good first telescope, this was pretty much at the top of my price range... ( under £300) but have absolutely no Idea what I can expect to see using it. I have read reviews from customers and they seemed pretty positive but would like to know what anybody here thinks! also do anyone meet up for stargazing close to the Portsmouth area? appreciate any and all advice... thanks..

Hi..........its your first scope, so its always a good start........nobody on here should down what a new comer (im assuming) has brought, cos at the end of the day its always a good start. Its not a bad scope, ive a friend that's got the mak version go to..........think its slightly bigger apature, and it does a good job. You will def be able to see the likes of saturns rings, and casini division, its moon titan. Jupiters belts and 4 main moons....easy. Brighter galaxys, globular clusters, open clusters, all easy targets.  The list goes on........... The down side is the finderscope doesn't look that great, but I guess if you align ok then the go to will do the rest. Im not familiar with how the scope tracks, or at all, so I cant advise............go out and have fun!

Sure it'll be fine. The great thing about GOTO is you can see loads of objects in one night. No messin round finding things!

I started with the SW130 with no goto and no P.... and it is still used, now have a solar filter and RA on it. i love the portability of it as its not too heavy, learn't an awful lot have seen many good images through it too. i know 2 people that have used them as a first scope and there just as pleased. there are limits but for the price i think its worth it.

There are plenty of people here with good info, poss one of the best sites to use

Don't worry about your kit. Get a (paper) copy of Turn Left at Orion and point your scope upwards - you'll have great fun.

Your scopes OK but what you're likely to see depends on where you use it in the ply mouth area chart I have it shows it's high in light pollution so possibly see stars around magnitude of 10. But if you. Go to dark sky area you should see objects up to a magnitude of 13 -13.6 check on your light pollution look at oblong of orion and count how many stars you can count within the oblong less than 10 then your like me the only place you see the milky way is the newsagents counter.
