Software for Understanding Optics

I have a basic understanding of the components used in telescopes, but would love to get a more detailed working understanding of the optical systems they use. It would be great it there is some kind of simulation software that enables you to play around with mirrors/lens and other bits. I've done a search myself but could not find what I'm looking for, maybe someone could suggest some software that may be useful

There is some free(ish?) optical design software called "OSLO" that a lot of people talk about. I've never tried it myself as I have access to ZEMAX, which is pretty much the industry standard now -- but quite pricey.
