Canon long exposures

Hi everybody!

I have recently delved into the realm of long exposures with my 450D and EOS utility, everything is going smoothly except I have noticed my camera is busy for a VERY long time in between exposures.

For a 1 minute exposure I have to delay the next sub for about 1m30s - is this normal?

I take it you have the camera set to process after exposure?

ie It has noise reduction turned on? If so it will take a photo (black) at same exposure and time etc right after it takes a pic thereby doubling the time it takes to take a photo.

Turn it off (noise reduction, that is), then take some dark frames after with same exposure and time.

For non astro work leave the NR on as it will give you the best result for a single image.

For astro work (as above) turn NR off and shoot darks at the end of the session.
