Earth Hour 2011

Earth Hour 2011 is fast approaching on Saturday 26th March 8.30pm. This hour will be the perfect time for observing (weather permitting) while there is a reduction in light pollution. Why not set up your gear and wow your neighbours and friends and make the most of this opportunity. I know I will.

According to the forecast, it's meant to be a clear night where I am too, so this is good timing!

The Astronomy gods were smiling-we had good viewing on Saturday night. I spent the hour using my little 76mm Skywatcher heritage dob. I visited Eta Carina, the Little Gem cluster, the Jewel Box, Omega Centauri, NGC 4372 and 4833 (GC in Musca), the Tarantula Nebula and wonder of wonders, the Sombrero galaxy. It just goes to show you that a small drop in the levels of light pollution in a large city is all that is needed for some serious observing ... a pity it doesn't happen all the time.
