Why is my telescope a microscope???

Recommended Posts

I can't be sure, but when I looked through my telescope this night, as well as the stars in the background, I saw a greeny mass with black 'blobs' that look like the bacteria you see in graphics and pictures. Is this an optical defect, because I haven't seen it before, and they tend to obscure the stuff I actually want to look at! I've tried cleaning my eyepieces with my glasses cleaning cloth to no avail :)

I think I've realised why they were so bright. When I think about it, my eyepiece (not the aperture though) was pointing almost directly at the waxing gibbous moon, so a lot of moonlight must have got through and reflected by eye on the surface of the eyepiece lens!
