ST 120 - first light

Recommended Posts

Well sort of- clear skies lasted all of one hour, but in that time I found

1) False colour was not as bad as I was led to believe/thought. Took viewing up to 100 on Jupiter and whilst there was a purple haze, definition was still good (2-3 stripes) and not much different to my ED80. At higher mag things got "mushy" real quick.

2) Really made a big improvement on M42- much more nebulousity to be seen, together with clear views of the trapezium and other stars. AS expected with a 2.25 increase in light grasp over the ED80.

3) Rack and pinion focuser, whilst quite smooth, was not as good as the 2-speed Crayford on my ED80. But there again I was expecting this.

4) Harder to split "doubles" like Castor, than in the ED80- again expected.

Conclusion- does exactly what I wanted- made a big improvement to Orion Nebula- and hopefully others when I get the chance to look.
